Back to School Rallies in Lexington

Lexington, Ky (WTVQ)- The ninth annual Back to School Rallies took place in Lexington Saturday.  It’s a collaborative community effort to distribute supplies for kids of all grade levels.

"I think it’s wonderful. I think it’s wonderful because the newer generation gets to see what is happening for them. This is all for them," said mother Cassandra Peoples.

There were 16 neighborhoods in Lexington participating, providing over 5100 kids supplies for this school year.

"People really do care here and it really shows. Everyone comes together for the sake of this neighborhood, and it really matters," said councilwoman Shevawn Akers.

"Everybody has joined together for one thing, and that’s to get these children the best education," said mother Cassandra Peoples.

"We want these children to know that learning is fun. That’s the messgage today that learning is fun and the community is behind them as they go on to pursue their education," said Senator Reginald Thomas.

"Parents say having these rallies really helps out, because they have to worry about back to school clothes, shoes and supplies, so the costs really start to add up," said Alycia Dahmer.

"Just coming out and playing the games, getting a head start on the school supplies helps, because I’ve got three kids. It gets quite expensive so it helps financially and they get to have a good time too," said mother Debbie Stone.

"It’s like a pep rally, it peps them up and gives them the basics and everything, because me having 5 children, still in school and everything…. any help, really, it just really helps out," said mother Tonya Reed.

Since 2011, more than 35,000 children have benefitted from these back to school rallies.
