Back to School: Lexington police remind drivers of school bus, school zone safety rules

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — As Fayette County students head back to school, Lexington Police are reminding drivers to follow the rules when school buses are on the road.

Lt. Chris Van Brackel with the Lexington Police Department’s Traffic Section says that if a school bus is stopped with red lights flashing and the stop arm extended, all vehicles traveling in the same direction must stop until the red lights are turned off. Drivers coming from the opposite direction must also stop unless the road has four or more lanes.

Police are also reminding drivers to stop for crossing guards holding stop signs and to obey school zone speed limits.
