Award-winning UK Dance Team Coach retiring after 15 years

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – University of Kentucky’s Dance Team head coach says she’s stepping down to retire.

Coach Dawn Duncan Walters has been head coach since 2009.

According to the UK Athletic Department, Walters’ teams competed in the Universal Dace Association championships, finishing as high as second in the nation in 2017. This year, her team placed third in the UDA Game Day competition.

UK says Walters is a recent recipient of the Coretta Scott King Spirit of Ivy Award in the 2024 Creative and Performing Arts category.

Walters is a Lexington native and was a member of the original UK Dance Cats in 1983. She was UK cheerleader on two national championship squads.

UK says a national search to replace her will begin immediately.
