Auditor: 3,090 untested rape kits in Kentucky

FRANKLIN, Ky. (WTVQ) – The state auditor says 3,090 sexual assault kits across Kentucky have never been tested.

He says these untested kits are an outrage.

The kits contain the physical evidence collected from victims and can identify DNA and other evidence investigators can use to find suspects.

The report says the average time to analyze the kits in Kentucky is eight months. It found that some of the problems stem from limited resources, budget cuts and retention issues at labs.

The auditor’s office says all sexual assault kids should be sent to the crime lab within ten days of becoming evidence and they should be tested within three months.

The current, untested kits will be processed using a 1.9 million dollar grant given to Kentucky State Police.
