Audit finds problems in Jackson sheriff’s office

MCKEE, Ky. (AP) — A state audit has found financial problems in the office of a sheriff who earlier arrested the Jackson County judge-executive over that official’s audit issues.

The Lexington Herald-Leader reports (http://bit.ly/1q3KiV4) an audit of Sheriff Denny Peyman’s office released Thursday found deficits of more than $117,000. The findings were referred to the Attorney General’s office for possible further investigation.

Peyman’s reponse in the audit said several problems had been fixed. He also said the fiscal court did not provide sufficient money for bookkeeping.

In January, Peyman arrested the judge-executive and the county treasurer on charges that included tampering with public records and forgery. He said he based the charges on a 2011 audit. The prosecutor dropped the charges.
