Asbury University ‘outpouring’ anniversary

Wilmore, Ky (WTVQ): This week celebrates the one-year anniversary of last year’s Asbury ‘outpouring.’

If you remember, on the campus of Asbury University, there was a major “revival” of worship and praise that went on for more than two weeks.

Sophomore Ava Miller remembers last year February 8th, “in this moment, like denominations, or race, or where you came from. Didn’t define this moment. It was a defining moment between unity between people,” Miller said, where more than 50,000 unexpected welcome guests joined Asbury University, a school of about 1,400 students, in the event.

Sarah Baldwin, the Vice President of Student Life at the university, says,

“They just came, it was like it was contagious,”

The event included people from all over the country, and across the globe to gather in the small town of Wilmore. Taking place shortly after the COVID pandemic, last year’s revival brought unity for so many.

“They also came because they are desperate,” Baldwin said. “Desperate for life to mean more than just squares on a screen. Desperate not to live under the oppressions of mental illness, depression, loneliness or shame.

“Watching that transition of isolation into this full freedom and Christ meeting us,” Miller said.

Now with empty risers, that will soon be filled, “this year is really about remembering what god did, giving thanks, and celebrating what god is still doing,” Baldwin said

Friday night at Asbury, there will be a worship event on campus, specifically for “gen z.”
