LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ)- A Lexington man has been arrested  and charged with a weekend shooting on the same day the victim died and was identified.

Investigators say they charged 24-year-old Chase Helvey with Murder, Assault, Kidnapping, and Tampering with Physical Evidence

The Fayette County coroner identified the victim as 36-year-old James Potter, of Richmond.

Investigators say this all began as a response to an injury collision around 9 p.m. Sunday, March 25.

University of Kentucky Police responded and took reports for a vehicle that had hit a university-owned building on Maxwelton Court. Potter a and 29-year-old woman, whose name has not been released, were transported to the hospital with serious injuries.

On Monday, it was determined that the victims had been assaulted prior to the collision, and Lexington Police say they were called to take over the investigation.

Potter had been shot and the woman had suffered blunt force trauma.

Detectives say that Helvey assaulted the woman at his home on Maxwelton over a prior dispute. As she attempted to flee with Potter, Helvey shot Potter.

Anyone with additional information about this case is asked to contact Lexington Police.
