Apple to invest $2.5 billion in Kentucky plant for iPhone, Apple Watch glass production

HARRODSBURG, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) Apple is making a major investment in Kentucky, announcing a $2.5 billion expansion of the Corning manufacturing facility in Mercer County.

Apple CEO Tim Cook says the investment will significantly boost production of cover glass for iPhones and Apple Watches, with all new devices soon to feature glass made at the Harrodsburg plant.

“I’m pleased to announce that very soon, this is for the first time ever, every single new iPhone and every single new Apple Watch sold anywhere in the world will contain cover glass made in Kentucky,” Cook said.

The announcement came Tuesday during a meeting with President Donald Trump in Washington, where Cook presented the president with a plaque made from the Kentucky-produced glass.

The expansion is expected to increase the Harrodsburg facility’s workforce by 50 percent and is part of Apple’s broader plan to invest $600 billion in the United States over the next four years.

In addition to the manufacturing expansion, Apple and Corning will open a new innovation center in Harrodsburg to support advanced research and manufacturing techniques.
