Animal Shelter Paws 4 the Cause reports overflowing
LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Kentucky State Police (KSP) has released the 2023 crime report, revealing a 35% increase in animal cruelty cases compared to the previous year, even though the total crime rate has remained steady. This alarming rise comes as local shelters are struggling to manage an overflow of pets.
Paws 4 the Cause, a Lexington-based animal shelter, is one of the facilities feeling the impact. The shelter recently took in 40 dogs from a single individual and is now operating at full capacity. Rescue Coordinator Anita Spreitzer expressed concerns about the growing number of abused animals. “We just don’t have room… we’re seeing more and more dogs and animals being abused,” Spreitzer said.
Adding to the shelter’s challenges, a new ban on dog and cat sales from pet stores is set to take effect on November 1st. While Paws 4 the Cause supports this legislation, they acknowledge the unprecedented influx of animals needing care.
For those looking to help, Paws 4 the Cause is seeking donations and volunteers to assist with the growing number of animals. More information can be found on their Facebook page.
Paws 4 the Cause says anyone interested in helping can donate to its organization or by fostering a pet.
