Andy Barr announces run for U.S. Senate seat in 2026
The central Kentucky congressman joins a growing field vying to replace retiring Senator Mitch McConnell
RICHMOND, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) — Republican Congressman Andy Barr has officially launched his campaign for U.S. Senate, announcing his candidacy for Senator Mitch McConnell’s seat during a campaign stop in Richmond.
McConnell, previously announced he will not seek re-election in 2026.
Barr, who currently represents Kentucky’s Sixth Congressional District, including Lexington, also released a campaign launch video on social media as part of his formal announcement.
He now joins a growing list of contenders, including former Republican Attorney General Daniel Cameron and Democratic House Minority Leader Pamela Stevenson of Louisville.
