AAA working to expand Slow Down Move Over law in Ky.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) — The Slow Down Move Over law in Kentucky helps protect vehicles on the side of the road — but it doesn’t include all types of vehicles.

AAA is working to expand the law to cover regular motorists and roadside workers in addition to the list of people already protected under the law.

When you see a car on the side of the road, it is important to slow down and move over if possible.

Right now the Slow Down Move Over Law in Kentucky only protects law enforcement, first responders, road construction workers and city or county vehicles when they are stopped on the road.

AAA is working to expand that law so regular motorists and roadside workers such as AAA drivers can also be protected.

“In 2017 through 2021, there were 2,000 people who were stranded motorists hit roadside across our country. Here in Kentucky, almost 30 people lost their lives. So it is a very important issue, we want everyone to be safe if they have to be alongside the road,” said Lori Weaver Hawkins, AAA public and government affairs manager.

A former AAA driver says there have been too many fatalities that could have been avoided if drivers slowed down and switched lanes.

“I mean hopefully, it’ll help get fatalities lower especially for people in the roadside industry it’s pretty high, it’s kind of alarmingly high,” said Seth Pierce, AAA fleet supervisor.

AAA will introduce a new bill this upcoming session in January; so far legislators seem to agree this is an important bill that should be passed.

So far 19 states in the country have expanded this law.
