AAA shares safety reminders as first snow creates slick roads across Kentucky

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – With the first snow and ice mix of the season hitting Central and Eastern Kentucky, drivers are being urged to slow down and stay alert. Roads across the region became slick Monday, creating hazardous travel conditions for many.

AAA Blue Grass says now is the time to adjust your driving habits for winter weather.

“That first snow really reminds people that they need to change their driving habits a bit when we get into the winter months,” said Lori Weaver-Hawkins with AAA Blue Grass.

Weaver-Hawkins cautioned that even light snow can cause dangerous road conditions. “Just because snowfall is light doesn’t mean it’s not going to cause some hazards on our roadways,” she said.

AAA recommends several key safety tips for navigating wintry conditions:

  • Slow down: Adjust your speed to match road conditions.

  • Increase following distance: Leave up to three times more space between you and the vehicle ahead.

  • Brake early: Slow down before intersections or turns.

  • Avoid sudden lane changes: Snow and ice often build up between lanes.

  • Stay calm if you skid: Ease off the accelerator and steer in the direction you want to go.

Drivers are also reminded to turn off cruise control in bad weather, clear all windows and mirrors before driving, and keep an emergency kit in their car.

“When you have adequate tread and pressure in your tires, it not only keeps you safe on the roadways all year long but also helps you get the most out of every gallon of gas,” Weaver-Hawkins added.
