AAA offers safety tips for driving during severe spring storms in Kentucky

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – As spring weather arrives in Kentucky, so does the threat of severe storms, and AAA is reminding drivers to stay safe when encountering hazardous conditions on the road.

Tornadoes, flooding, hail, and lightning can all pose serious dangers for motorists. AAA advises that if a tornado is spotted, drivers should never try to outrun it. Instead, they should seek shelter immediately.

During heavy rain, slowing down and avoiding standing water can help prevent hydroplaning. In hailstorms, pulling over and protecting yourself from flying glass is the safest option.

AAA also warns that if lightning strikes while inside a vehicle, the metal frame—not the tires—provides protection. Drivers should remain inside until the storm passes.

The agency recommends keeping an emergency kit in the car with essentials such as flashlights, batteries, bottled water, and first aid supplies.
