AAA driving tips
AAA says to drive gently in extreme weather, as your vehicle will only have 30% of its normal traction on the snow covered roads Thursday. They say sliding is most likely to happen at intersections, while you change your speed or make a turn.
They advise to brake well in advance of intersections and turns and to use shuffle steering. AAA says to gradually use gas to keep the car straight after a turn.
They say vehicles become more sensitive to braking and steering when tires have little traction. "When you consider the amount of tire rubber that touches the surface of the road is as small as a size 9 shoe, it is easier to see how cars can slide on ice and snow," says Lilia S. Mason, AAA Spokesperson.
AAA says drivers should resist the temptation to speed through snow piles left by plows while making turns. If you have too much speed in a turn the car rocks to the outside, lifting weight off the inside tires increasing the chances of skidding.
