A walk in Lexington for heroin awareness, and a warning
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) — Dozens of people gathered in downtown Lexington on Saturday morning, to both spread awareness about Heroin addiction, and rally for legislative action.
Along Main Street, near Thoroughbred Park, people walked with signs and shared their stories regarding this drug in the Lexington area. Kayla Greene, one of the Domonique Jason Greene Foundation creators, says they started this rally in hopes to push for Heroin addiction to be treated like a disease – seeking treatment for those addicted, instead of incarceration. They said they started this foundation – and in turn, the quest to further education and awareness about Heroin addiction and overdose, after the tragic death of their son just six weeks ago.
Especially of note to the couple was the drug Fentanyl.
U.S. drug officials say dealers have been lacing heroin across the country with this incredibly potent painkiller, as it boosts the potency of their ‘product’. Officials say one side-effect of this addition is the rapid spike in heroin overdose-related deaths, since addicts aren’t expecting the sudden increase in potency, their ‘normal’ dose ends up being deadly.
Not to mention, the DEA says a dose of Fentanyl the size of a few grains of salt can kill a person.
“A lot of people like to bury their head in the sand, thinking that it’s not happening, or it’s not happening in their community, or can’t happen to their children. (…) Heroin is here, it’s in our communities, and it effects all of us,” addded Kayla Greene.
