Police Capture Prison Escapee Overnight
Police caught an inmate after he walked away from the Blackburn Correctional Facility in Lexington early Thursday morning.
Police said Richard Roland, 27, walked away from the minimum-security prison around 1:00 a.m.
Just after 2:00 a.m., police said a couple of off-duty Blackburn employees spotted him walking near Rose and Jim’s Bar off Georgetown road.
Officials said when police arrived, Roland ran into a wooded area along the side of Georgetown Road.
Police dogs were able to track him down quickly.
Police said while helping to apprehend Roland, one of the dogs bit Roland in the shoulder.
He suffered minor injuries. He was checked out on the scene, but was then taken to the Fayette County Jail.
Roland is currently serving a seven-year sentence at Blackburn for convictions out of Clark County for burglary, possession of a firearm and handgun by a felon and promoting contraband.
He would have been eligible for parole in March 2014.
Police said he will be charged with escape for Thursday’s incident.
