MedTech College closes with little to no warning to students
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ)-Some students are upset, and most are just confused after their school med-tech college closed its doors for good.
MedTech student Jana Mills tells her friends, “I wanna know what’s going on. Why did this happen so quick? Why didn’t we get a notice?”
“It’s heartbreaking. I mean I have two kids and basically that was the only reason why…that’s the only thing I’m worried about,” says single mom Mercedes Cowhed.
She was about halfway done with her medical assistant training. Her friend Janna Mills, also studying in the same field, was on track to finish her degree at the end of the summer.
Mills says, “A lot of people gave up everything to come to school to support their families and I had six weeks left and now I don’t know what I’m going to do actually?”
The school’s closing, leaves many questions unanswered. Students say they received an email Tuesday night that classes would be cancelled the next day, but they had no idea it would be closing.
Earlier this summer, the school was forced to close its campuses in Virginia, Maryland and DC. The US Department of Education denied MedTech’s re-certification which the school says led to financial struggles.
Many students believe this was under-wraps for quite some time and they wish the school would’ve given the courtesy to talk to students about what was going on face to face.
Student Marry Jeffers says she was “…completely blindsided. The fact that they didn’t even ask us? They just emailed us. And when we tried to call they wouldn’t answer no questions. I have a family to support.”
The group of students laugh about the fact they didn’t drop out or give up.They say many of their teachers also seemed to be out the loop and that they enjoyed the college.
“I did like the program here and I actually loved the teachers. They were people that you could actually go confide in,” says Cowherd.
Spencerian College has offered to waive application fees for MedTech students wanting to transfer. A sign on the front door inside the college says there will be someone handing out transcripts for students to pick up in person Thursday between 12-5pm.
