Obama marks anniversary of nuke deal; GOP aims to undermine

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is marking the anniversary of the nuclear deal with Iran with a vow that the United States and its partners will uphold their commitments as long as Iran abides by the pact. Congressional Republicans repeatedly are trying to undermine the international accord.

Obama said in a statement Thursday that the deal avoids further conflict and makes us safer.

Under the pact, Tehran rolled back its nuclear program. The U.S. and other world powers agreed to suspend wide-ranging oil, trade and financial sanctions that had choked the Iranian economy.

The House weighed a bill to impose new sanctions on Iran for its continuing development and testing of its ballistic missile program. The measure would restate U.S. policy to deny the Iranian government and banks access to U.S. dollars.
