SAL All-Star game recap

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – The North beat the South 2-1 in the 2016 edition of the SAL All-Star game at Whitaker Bank Ballpark.

Hagerstown’s Max Schrock drove in both runs for the Northern Division in a 2-1 win over the Southern Division in the 57th annual South Atlantic League All-Star game in front of 8,126 fans Tuesday night at Whitaker Bank Ballpark.

The two All-Star pitching staffs combined to strike out 22 batters, 11 by each team.

Victor Robles of Hagerstown led off the game with a single and stole second.  Schrock followed with a run-scoring double to right field.

Yeyson Yrizarri of Hickory and Daniel Arribas of West Virginia started the fifth inning for the Northern Division with singles, putting runners on first and third.  Arribas was caught trying to steal second, and Robles struck out, but Schrock singled to left field, scoring Yrizarri.

The score remained 2-0 until the bottom of the eighth, when Austin Rei of Greenville put the Southern Division on the board with a home run.   Northern Division reliever Ryan Meisinger hit two batters later in the inning, but there was no more scoring.

Northern starter Mitch Keller got the win. Southern starter P. J. Conlon took the loss.

Schrock won the milb.com Top Star Award, which is presented to the game’s most valuable player.
