Fire forces evacuation of Lexington apartment building

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Several people were forced from their apartment Monday morning after a fire broke out.

Firefighters were called to the Courtside Apartments on Dalton Court shortly before 1 a.m.

Someone called to report the smell of smoke after a smoke alarm went off in the building.

When firefighters arrived, there was heavy smoke in the complex.

They immediately evacuated everyone in the building.

There are 12 apartments in all in the complex.

Firefighters say they found a fire smoldering in the attic.

Firefighters doused the fire and took out most of the insulation in the attic to keep it from flaring back up.

Crews cut power to the building.

Everyone living in the apartment complex had to find another place to stay overnight and won’t be allowed back in until the city inspects the building and allows the power to be turned back on.

No one was injured in the fire.

An investigator is expected on the scene Monday to determine the cause of the fire.
