BEREA, Ky. (WTVQ) – State police have identified the deputy and suspect who they say were involved in a shooting.

Troopers say Madison County deputy Kevin Crutcher is recovering after he was shot Wednesday in Berea. They say 51-year-old Daniel Pigg of Berea was shot to death.

According to state police, Pigg was driving a truck when Crutcher pulled him over. Troopers say Pigg pulled into his own driveway at Log Cabin Road and Arthur Jackson Road, and started walking toward the house. Investigators say he ignored Crutcher’s verbal commands, then pulled out a handgun and started shooting at the deputy.

According to state police, Crutcher returned fire and fatally shot Pigg. They say Crutcher was taken to U.K. Hospital in Lexington for a gunshot wound to the abdomen. Troopers say he was treated and released.

State police say Crutcher is a nine-year veteran of the sheriff’s department.
