Pikeville teen dies from injuries suffered in weekend crash

PIKEVILLE, Ky. (WTVQ) – A Pikeville teenager died Monday from injuries suffered in a weekend car wreck, according to State Police. Investigators say 17-year old Matthew Thacker was traveling east on Zebulon Highway in the Zebulon community Saturday afternoon when his vehicle was struck head-on by an oncoming vehicle.

State Police say the oncoming vehicle was trying to avoid running into the back of another vehicle that was attempting to turn left onto Winns Branch Road when the collision happened. Thacker was airlifted to Pikeville Medical Center where he died two days later, according to KSP.

Investigators say it appears Thacker was wearing his seat belt and that alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the accident, which remained under investigation by State Police.
