Red Barn Radio 20th anniversary show Wednesday

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Red Barn Radio kicks off its’ 20th anniversary season Wednesday, Sept. 1. Red Barn Radio is a live music program that showcases musicians from Kentucky and neighboring states.

Producer and founder Ed Commons said it began with bluegrass and old time music but has evolved over the years to touch on all types of music that have a past regionally.

“The music scene in our region is changing dramatically and it’s a very exciting time,” said Commons.

“I think we do a great job of expanding peoples notions about what southern music is,” added Associate Producer Brad Becker. “At the outset it used to be have mandolin, fiddle, then you may apply.”

Becker said they’re catering to include a younger generation interested in the evolving music program.

“One of our claims to fame is we turned down Sturgill Simpson,” joked Becker.

According to Becker, Simpson’s music at the time wasn’t what they traditionally looked for, but ultimately the band agreed to do an unplugged segment, “They showed up with 200 people and rocked the place.”

The 20th anniversary season will air live at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 1. You can watch the livestream on all of Red Barn Radio’s social media platforms. More information can be found HERE.
