State’s COVID positivity, hospitalizations again reach new highs

FRANKFORT, Ky. (WTVQ) – The hope that COVID’s record numbers might taper off continue to be dashed.
The state reported 5,401 new cases Thursday, the second highest number since the pandemic began. And other numbers were just as bad.
“Today I am announcing 5,401 newly reported cases of COVID-19 – the second highest report since the pandemic began. I am also sad to report 27 new deaths and a positivity rate that has increased to 13.24%,” Gov. Andy Beshear said in a social media video. “These are records we can’t afford to be setting as the lives of our people are at risk. Please, get vaccinated and mask up indoors.”

In its daily report, the state said the new cases pushed the state’s total to 557,835 cases.

The 1,759 new cases among people 18 and under broke the previous record of 1,518 set Wednesday which had eclipsed the previous high of 1,335 set Tuesday.

The 27 deaths mean the state now has lost 7,667 people to COVID-related causes.

The new record positivity rate of 13.24% is up from 13.16% Wednesday, 12.89% Tuesday and 12.87% Monday.

The number of people in the hospital rose to 2,115 from 2,074 Wednesday, 2,014 Tuesday and 1,893 Monday.

The number of people in ICU climbed again to 590, up from 549 Wednesday, 589 Tuesday and 529 Monday. Meanwhile, 345 people are on ventilators, up from 338 Wednesday and Tuesday and 301 Monday.
