Lexington firefighters install smoke detectors door-to-door
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Lexington firefighters are providing free smoke alarms to high-risk neighborhoods.
Saturday, Lexington firefighters went door-to-door in the Armstrong Mill Road corridor, an area that has been studied by the Lexington Fire Department for five years and is considered to be high-risk for possible fires.
“What we did is we took years worth of data, of dispatched structure fire, compared to our free smoke alarm program installation data, and we overlayed those maps, and we pinpointed that the Armstrong Mill Road corridor as an area with high risk and low protection,” said Battalion Chief Jordan Saas.
About 70 to 80 firefighters were dispatched throughout the day to walk door-to-door to the 750 homes in the area to offer free smoke detector installation and safety checks.
Firefighters alerted homeowners of the canvassing by placing door hangers on each home on Wednesday.
The program is possible through the federal Fire Prevention and Safety Grant, though Saas says smoke detector safety checks and installation are offered year round.
The Armstrong Mill corridor is the first of three Lexington areas, targeted as high-risk, that will be canvassed through the grant.
