Families make big transitions as kids go back to school

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Fayette County, one of more than a dozen districts that went back to school today. Of course, things look a little different in the classrooms. But, students and parents say they are ready to make this school year a great one.

Class is finally back in session for hundreds of Fayette County students. Before that first bell rang they came prepared with a grade-a attitude and their masks.

Whether they walked in, were dropped off or were bused in, these students were so excited to be in class, from upperclassmen to middle schoolers.

“Yeah, I’m looking forward to being the leader of the cross country team,” said Calvin Adams, Fayette County high school student.

Henry Adams, another high school student, said, “I’m looking forward to meeting people from last year and hopefully sitting with whoever I want at lunch.”

Middle schooler Annemarie Dvorack said, “You learn better and you collaborate more.”

Annemarie’s mom Tanya Dvorak says this is a big year for her kids. We are talking new schools from kindergarten to sixth grade.

“I think everyone’s a little excited but nervous too to have a little bit of new changes, and for our new kindergartner it will be her first time to wear a mask all day so it will be a little different for her but I know she can handle it,” said Tanya Dvorak.

Annemarie says she’s welcoming change. It doesn’t matter to her if its a brand new school or she has to make new friends. She’d rather rock a face mask and student ID instead of a meeting ID any day.

“In-person learning is awesome. Online learning is horrible,” expressed Annemarie. “You forget to do things… I couldn’t remember to do it.”

On this first day of school, students like Annemarie don’t need to worry so much about logging on to learn. For now, her only worries will be making sure she’s in class on time and remembering a mask.

The excitement here at this school was universal as not only students, but teachers as well were very excited to be back in class.
