Polar Plunge back after winter storm freezes 2015 event

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ)- The weather was nice but that doesn’t mean the pool wasn’t ice cold at the annual Polar Plunge in Lexington, Saturday.

More than 300 men and women were expected to take part in the annual event meant to raise money and awareness for Special Olympics Kentucky. Organizers reminds us the event was canceled a year ago due to frigid temperatures and a major winter storm.

Here’s how it works: participants raise a minimum of $75 and then jump into the pool. Many folks wear costumes, which are judged.

Organizers say despite the cancellation, participants still raised more than $68,000 to support Special Olympics programs of sports training and competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities in Kentucky.
