KYTC treating roads in central Kentucky ahead of snowfall
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – State crews are currently treating area roads with salt ahead of a rash of snow expected to blanket the region in the coming days.
The snow event is calling for snow bursts or snow squalls where snow fall can be very sporadic. A snow squall is a sudden snow fall where whiteout conditions can take place. If you drive into those kind of conditions here are some safety tips:
- Slow down gradually and drive at a speed that suits the conditions.
- Try to get off the road when visibility is near zero – Don’t stop on the travel portion of the road.
- Make sure your lights on turned on – use your low-beam headlights. If you have fog lights on your vehicle, use them in addition to your low beams.
- Increase your following distance. Depending on speed, you will need at least three car lengths to brake safely.
- Stay alert and be patient.
