Possible Salmonella outbreak in Estill County

IRVINE, Ky. (WTVQ) – The Estill County Health Department is investigating a possible Salmonella outbreak in the community. Local health officials are working with the Kentucky Department for Public Health to determine the extent of the outbreak as well as the source of the illness.

It appears people began getting sick at the end of January with gastrointestinal illness. Rapid molecular lab tests have been reported positive for Salmonella, but further testing is needed to properly isolate and identify the bacteria, according to health department officials.

Three hospitalizations have been reported. One person remains in the hospital but is expected to recover, according to health officials.

Salmonella infections are relatively common, generally resulting in diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps 12-to-72 hours after infection, with the illness usually lasting 4-to-7 days, according to health officials.

Although most people recover without treatment, severe infections may occur, especially in infants, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems.
