Gambling problem info available during world-record Powerball jackpot run
Louisville, Ky. (WTVQ) – As the current Powerball jackpot sits at $1.4 billion, the Kentucky Lottery and the Kentucky Council on Problem Gambling are urging perspective for the world-record jackpot.
“While we’re excited to bring this event to our players, we also want them to keep in mind our ‘Play Responsibly’ mantra,” said the Kentucky Lottery’s President and CEO Arch Gleason. “Your odds of winning the jackpot on Wednesday night are one in 292,201,338. Players really need to keep that in perspective. And remember – it’s truly is just a game.”
“The reaction of the Kentucky Lottery is expected,” said the Executive Director of the KY Council on Problem Gambling Mike Stone. “The Lottery has achieved the highest rankings in quality and responsible gaming among lotteries around the world. Its mission is to enhance revenue for the Commonwealth of Kentucky, but its leaders recognize that problem and addicted gambling exist and take steps to address it, both by responsible gaming practices and by supporting counselor training programs.”
Stone noted that someone who decides a retirement plan is spending significant amounts of money on Powerball tickets may be foolish, but that person likely is not an addicted gambler. An addicted gambler is someone who repeats his or her gambling behavior in spite of recurring bad outcomes. It becomes a compulsion and the driving force in their lives.
Simple responsible gaming tips for those who choose to gamble include:
- Set and stick to a limit of time and money
- Think of it as entertainment, not an investment
- Don’t gamble to escape feelings of anxiety, stress or depression.
