Central KY students adding warning stickers to alcohol in stores

RICHMOND, Ky. (WTVQ)- Student volunteers are getting ready to add more than 10,000 stickers to alcohol products being sold in some Madison County stores. The Holiday Sticker Shock Campaign is an effort to raise awareness about underage drinking and youth access to alcohol.

The award-winning Madison County Youth in Action team says the project includes the Richmond Police Department, Madison County Sheriff’s Office, Berea Police Department, Kentucky State Police and the Eastern Kentucky University Police Department. On Wednesday, student volunteers will place bright yellow stickers on alcohol products that appeal to underage drinkers. The teams will add the labels to items at Monty’s Liquor, Liquor Mart I, Liquor Mart II, and Liquor World.

The youth action team says it hopes the Sticker Shock public awareness campaign will also help strengthen laws against providing alcohol to a minor. It says, “According to NHTSA, 733 people in the United States died in drunk driving crashes in 2013. That year drunk driving crashes claimed victims who were not intoxicated every two and a half hours. There were 10,076 alcohol-impaired crash fatalities in 2013, accounting for 31% of the overall fatalities.
