Laurel shelter dogs in need of Christmas spirit for rescues

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ)-Simply doing its job is becoming difficult for an animal shelter in Laurel County after it unexpectedly received more than 130 dogs from a shut down rescue operation.

“Been a challenge.”

That’s how Laurel County Emergency Management director, Albert Hale describes the situation since Laurel County Animal Shelter took in the dogs taken from Homeward Bound. It’s far from a permanent home but it’ll do for now.

The 130+ dogs taken from the rescue recently, are a couple places. Some are at the actual shelter but most are at the Laurel County Fairgrounds.

In case you’re wondering, they’re not at risk of being euthanized, according to Hale. Where the dogs are taking refuge is the agriculture building. It’s filled with four-legged friends feeling the love of selfless volunteers who could use some love themselves.

“Anything that we need to do, volunteers have been super, they’ve helped tremendously,” says Hale.

Inside, volunteers clean kennels, prepare treats and provide walks. Organizers say they need more folks like these and while food and water are bountiful, the building isn’t meant for long-term use. Organizers make it clear what they need now.

“We’re urging rescue groups, if they’re a 501C, if they’re in Kentucky or outside Kentucky, we’re urging those folks to get involved with us and maybe take some of these animals to lessen the burden on us here.”

Shelter organizers say you can contact them for information on how to rescue the dogs at (606) 231-4341.
