Firefighters train for rough terrain air transport scenarios
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – The Lexington Fire Department is constantly training for different emergency scenarios. It says the situations can include anything from minor car collisions, to high-rise apartment fires and rescues from rocky bluffs on the Kentucky River. And today, crews trained for rough terrain air transport scenarios.
Lexington Fire Department Engine 18’s crew is on Old Richmond Road in rural Fayette County. The department says the firefighters are used to responding to rough terrain and inaccessible areas.
“We want the extra training,” says Fire Lieutenant Serf Robles who serves on Engine 18. “We owe it to ourselves and the people we serve to be as prepared as we can be for every possibility.”
According to the department, today’s training included two hours of classroom time, which was provided by a flight crew from Air Methods. It says firefighters worked on establishing emergency landing zones, among other things. Crews were then able to use what they learned during a drill that involved an Air Methods helicopter landing.
