Coroner: Toddler dies in Frankfort apartment fire

FRANKFORT, Ky. (WTVQ) – A toddler died in a Franklin County fire early Friday morning, according to the coroner who says his mom and sibling are still fighting for their lives.

Frankfort Police say the fire started around two o’clock Friday morning at the Country Hills Apartments on Schenkel Lane.

The coroner says a post mortem examination revealed Demetrius Johnson, two, died of smoke inhalation. He says Johnson’s mom and sister are both in critical condition at the University of Kentucky hospital.

Firefighters do not yet know what caused this fire but crews don’t believe it is suspicious.

Code enforcement plans to inspect the building to make sure it was up to standards.

No word on if working smoke detectors were in the home.
