Somerset crash kills one late Saturday night

SOMERSET, Ky. (WTVQ)- Police in Somerset say one person was killed in a three-car crash late Saturday night.

It happened just after 8 p.m., officers say, on West KY 80 between KY 914 and West KY 1248. According to police, the investigation revealed that a red 2000 GMC pickup was turning around in a parking lot to go eastbound on KY 80 when it pulled into the path of a 1999 Chevrolet pickup that was traveling east on KY 80.

The GMC pickup was occupied by Carli D. Burton, age 20, Terri D. Burton, age 51, and Kenneth D. Holts, age 34, all of Somerset. These occupants were not cooperative during the on-scene investigation and the driver has yet to be identified, say officers.

The Chevrolet pickup was driven by Mark E. Keeney, age 54, of Nancy. Keeney had two passengers in the truck with him: Charles A. Keeney, age 51, of Nancy and Robyn F. Heath, age 50, of Somerset.

Keeney unsuccessfully attempted to avoid colliding with the 2000 GMC when it pulled into his path. After striking the GMC, Keeney’s truck then struck a westbound 2001 Dodge pickup that was driven by Delbert L. Darnell, age 71, of Russell Springs. Darnell had one passenger in his truck, 63-year-old Bennie J. George, also of Russell Springs, according to investigators.

All occupants of the Keeney truck had to be extricated from the wreckage by the Somerset Fire Department.

Holts, Heath, and Charles Kenney were treated at the scene and transported to the Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital by the Somerset-Pulaski County EMS. AirMethods later airlifted Keeney to the UK Hospital.

Holts fled the hospital on foot while being treated in the emergency room. Heath was pronounced dead at the hospital by the Pulaski County Coroner’s Office at 9:29 PM. She was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision, according to investigators.
