Students alert after shooting at UK house party

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Classes don’t start until Wednesday at the University of Kentucky but already police are investigating an assault of a student near campus.

Investigators say what began as a party on Crescent Avenue, ended with gunfire and someone taken to the hospital.

Both Lexington and University Police responded to a shots fired call around two o’clock Tuesday morning. The call triggered a campus-wide alert.

According to authorities, the shooting happened in the 1000 block of Crescent Avenue, where students told ABC 36 a fight started after a group of students were denied entrance into a house party.

Witnesses say the fight continued to escalate and resulted in property damage and one student being taken to the hospital.

Police say that student suffered non-life threatening injuries to the head and face after he was hit multiple times with a wooden post from the fence of the porch.

Witnesses say the suspects ran off just before police arrived on scene. Students tell ABC 36 that they heard several gunshots while the group ran away.

Investigators say they found two homes were hit by bullets. No other damages or injuries were reported.
Students living in the Crescent Avenue area plan to be extra alert.

UK Police say officers don’t have jurisdiction off-campus but they plan to increase patrols for the upcoming school year. Officers also say since campus security cameras were installed last year, crime has dropped.

No arrests have been made in the assault.
