Laurel County Sheriff: Child wanders off, grandparents arrested

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ) –  A one-year old child’s grandparents were arrested on Tuesday in Laurel County after the child was reportedly running through a parking lot alone off of Pine Grove Road outside London, according to the sheriff.

When authorities arrived they say witnesses told them the child had been taken into one of the units at Emma Apartments.

Investigators say they could not get anyone to come to the door of the apartment. They say they later spotted 48-year old Egbert Hensley, leaving the home and they confronted him.

Investigators say officers got into a scuffle with Hensley before taking him into custody. Authorities also arrested a second suspect, Hensley’s wife, 43 year-old Mitzi Hensley.  The couple is from Falmouth.  Investigators say they picked their grandson up at his foster home in Falmouth to take him to a funeral in Laurel County.

The two were lodged in the Laurel County Detention Center. Investigators say the couple faces several charges, including public intoxication, resisting arrest and felony custodial interference.

Authorities say the child was actually in the custody of social services and was not even supposed to be in the care of his grandparents.
