Searching for flood victims among snakes, mosquitoes, mud

FLAT GAP, Ky. (AP) — Rescue crews searching for victims of a Kentucky flash flood are battling mosquitoes and snakes, piles of rubble and mud so thick it sucks shoes off their feet.

The rescuers recovered a third body Wednesday, but another man remains missing, three days after the flooding ravaged the rural Johnson County community. The fates of four more remain uncertain. Families reported them missing, but they may have escaped or could be stranded in their homes.

Johnson County Coroner J.R. Frisby identified the body found Wednesday as 22-year-old Richard Blair. The body of 74-year-old Willa Mae Pennington was found Tuesday about a half-mile downstream. The body of 56-year-old Herman Eddie May Sr. was also pulled from the floodwaters.

Rescue teams will continue searching Thursday as dozens of families comb through the wreckage of their homes.
