Traveling Vietnam War Memorial in Lexington through Sunday

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ)- A traveling replica of the Vietnam War Memorial is open in Lexington through Sunday afternoon. The wall is up at the Kentucky Horse Park. It replicates the Washington memorial, displaying the names of veterans who died during the war.

The display opened on Thursday. But a formal opening ceremony for the memorial was held Friday. It included a salute to two Kentuckians who won the Medal of Honor for their heroism during the war. One of them is Don Jenkins of Morgantown. The Army says in January of 1969, despite being wounded himself, Jenkins rescued several wounded soldiers. The Army says Jenkins was exposed to intense enemy fire during the rescue. The other Medal of Honor recipient from Kentucky is Gary Littrell, who now lives in Florida.

The state says a total of 1,104 Kentuckians died in the Vietnam War. Their names appear on the traveling wall, and are also inscribed at the permanent memorial in Frankfort.

The memorial at the Kentucky Horse Park will be open 24 hours a day through 3:00p.m. Sunday. Admission and parking are free. Click here for more details.
