Jackson County Judge Exec. refuses to perform marriages
JACKSON CO., Ky. (WTVQ) — Jackson County Judge Executive Shane Gabbard told WTVQ over the phone that he personally does not support the SCOTUS’s decision regarding same-sex marriage.
He says, under Kentucky law, the Judge Executive’s office doesn’t have to preside over marriages, and his office is electing to not provide that service, citing his agreement with Kentucky’s earlier vote, which supported marriage being limited to man-woman couples.
The office says that couples can still come to the clerk’s office and get licenses, but they will need someone else to preside over them; for instance, a county judge or minister.
