Dumpster diving report prompts warning from police
GEORGETOWN, Ky. (WTVQ) – Georgetown Police sent out a reminder Friday about protecting yourself from possible identity theft after a woman reportedly found a man going through some papers in her trash.
Police offered some simple tips to protect your privacy and identity:
Invest in a paper shredder. Police say this is especially important for bills, invoices, any paper that would have your name, address and other personal information on it.
Break down large boxes that have logos or product names, and cut off the area of the box that has your name and address on it.
Old credit cards or membership cards especially, should be cut into small pieces before disposal – try to cut along bar codes, or across numbers.
Police say, if possible, to keep your trash cans in a garage if possible, or close to the house until shortly before normal trash pickup.
