State lawmaker, county attorney face off in AG primary
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Republicans looking for someone to try to end the GOP’s long losing streak in elections for Kentucky attorney general have two choices.
The May 19 GOP primary for the job as Kentucky’s chief law enforcement officer pits former prosecutor and current state Sen. Whitney Westerfield against Lawrence County Attorney Michael Hogan.
The nominee will face Andy Beshear, the son of Gov. Steve Beshear, in the general election. Andy Beshear is unopposed in the Democratic primary.
Westerfield touts his experience as chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee and his role in shaping legislation to combat heroin addiction and to revamp the state’s juvenile justice system.
Hogan points to his legal career spanning both sides of the courtroom — from a stint as public defender to his long tenure as a prosecutor.
