Friends mourn loss of Madison Co. man in drowning death

BEREA, Ky. (WTVQ) – A sad day in Madison County on Wednesday, after officers pulled the body of Eugene Wren from the Silver Creek around 11:00 p.m. Tuesday night.

Madison County sheriff’s deputies believe Wren drove off Paint Lick Road just outside of Berea, then went into the water.  They say he must have tried to get out and get to safety, but was washed down stream.

Tuesday afternoon, someone saw the car sticking out of the water and called 911. After hours of searching, crews say they finally found Wren’s body pushed against some vegetation in the middle of the high water.

Those who knew him, say they’re heart broken to hear the news of his drowning.

"He was always friendly, cutting up, he never had a hard word to say about anyone.  He always always friendly about everything," says close friend Crystal Saylor.

An account to help his family with funeral costs has been set up at Central Bank and Trust under Wren’s name.
