Police investigating Lexington death as homicide

UPDATE (3/17 3:21 p.m.): The Fayette County Coroner has now released the name of the victim in this case.  He is 20 year-old Vondre R. Smithers, of Lexington.  An autopsy will be performed Wednesday morning to determine more about the manner of death.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Lexington police are investigating a death Tuesday morning as a homicide.

According to officers, they received a call at around 8 a.m. to Bellefonte Drive.  Investigators say the caller thought a man on the street had been hit by a car.  When they arrived, police say they discovered the man had a gunshot wound.  He was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, but was pronounced dead at UK.

Police say they are investigating the case as a homicide.
