Kentucky parents weigh in on school lunches
The Kentucky Health Issues Poll (KHIP,) conducted by the Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky and Interact for Health was administered from October through November of 2014. Highlights of school lunch responses include:
•Nearly 7 in 10 (67%) Kentucky parents said their oldest child’s school lunch is very or somewhat nutritious; 23% said the lunch is not that nutritious or not nutritious at all.
•Parents in northern Kentucky (80%), greater Lexington (73%), and western Kentucky (70%) were more likely to say their child’s lunch is very nutritious or somewhat nutritious.
•Parents in greater Louisville (63%) and eastern Kentucky (57%) were less likely to say their child’s lunch is very nutritious or somewhat nutritious.
•Almost 7 in 10 (69%) said their child’s school should offer more lunch options made from scratch.
•Just 2 in 10 (20%) said their child’s school offers enough made from scratch lunch options.
•The majority of parents in eastern Kentucky (82%), western Kentucky (66%), greater Lexington (64%), northern Kentucky (61%) and greater Louisville (61%) said additional made from scratch options should be made offered at school.
