Deal close for McCracken County animal shelter

PADUCAH, Ky. (AP) — McCracken County Judge-Executive Bob Leeper says an agreement is close with the local Humane Society for animal shelter services.

According to The Paducah Sun (http://bit.ly/1F0BhRo), Leeper is scheduled to brief the McCracken County Fiscal Court commissioners Monday night on the status of meetings county and city officials have had with McCracken County Humane Society members.

McCracken County had an agreement with the nonprofit Humane Society until November 2011, when euthanasia incidents came to light and the county severed ties. An investigation revealed inhumane euthanasia practices on dogs and cats.

Following a police investigation, the Humane Society’s euthanasia specialist was convicted and sentenced to jail.

County officials began discussions for a new contract with the Humane Society last year after a county task force recommended re-establishing a partnership.
