Driver Strikes Pole, Blocks Power to Several Homes

Berea, KY (WTVQ) -An accident in Madison County sends one man to the hospital and leaves an entire neighborhood without power.

"It has happened a few times since I’ve been here,” says neighbor, Kevin Armstrong.

Lights went out a little early for one community in Berea after the freak accident. Police say a driver veered off the roadway, struck a pole and was ejected from the vehicle.

Power was disrupted for several hours. Kevin Armstrong says that those hours went slowly. The experience, he says taught him to better prepare for outages.

Neighbors turned to lamps and flashlights while crews worked to fix the problem. Racing to get all power restored as traffic was expected to increase with factory workers getting off at 3 AM and the regular morning commute.

"It’s a dark area when there’s no power at all!, “said Officer Robert Short.

Traffic was redirected from Big Hill Road as an act of precaution for other drivers. Officer Short says the road is too risky to maneuver without proper lighting.

“This is a fairly curvy road,” said Officer Short. “People can’t see until they are right where the accident took place".

Police are still investigating the cause of the accident. The driver was taken to University of Kentucky Hospital.
