Video of dramatic plane escape over the ocean

HONOLULU (KABC) — A pilot ran out of fuel and ditched his single-engine plane 253 miles away from Hawaii on Sunday. The crash and rescue was captured on video.

At about 12:30 p.m., the pilot traveling from Tracy, California reported to the Hawaii National Guard that he had only three hours of fuel left and would be ditching his Cirrus SR-22 about 230 miles north east of Maui. The Coast Guard Joint Rescue Coordination Center in Honolulu coordinated with the pilot to ditch his plane near a cruise ship en route to Maui.

About four hours later, the pilot deployed a parachute system and got onto a life raft amid 9 to 12 feet waves and 25 to 28 mph winds.

Coast Guard video shows the plane releasing its parachute and diving nose-first before leveling out and landing into the ocean. The pilot then gets on top of the aircraft and drifts away in a small raft.

By 5:21 p.m., the cruise ship was able to rescue the pilot, who was in good condition.
