Mayor Gray: “Getting Things Done” – 2015 State of the City

"Getting things done,” Mayor Jim Gray said multiple during his State of the City Tuesday.

Gray first coined that saying during his campaign and he said Tuesday the city is continuing that vision.

The mayor told the crowd at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Lexington that since he first took office in 2011, Lexington has been able to create jobs and get itself back on track without forgetting about the important necessities, like public safety.

“When the economy began recovering, we initiated major investments in Public Safety, and since 2012 we’ve made significant investments in police and corrections officers, firefighters, and in new equipment,” Gray said during the address.

The mayor said the city has invested almost three-quarters of a billion dollars in public safety since 2012.

“It’s important to deliver those services in the most efficient way and to focus on continuous improvement,” Gray said.

For the Division of Police, they’re starting 2015 off with a brand new police chief with an aggressive policing plan to get “more things done.”

The mayor says making Lexington the “best” place for business and living is the key to his plan.

They mayor also talked about his plan to rebuild the historic courthouse in Downtown Lexington

"So here’s our plan for the Historic Courthouse: In 2014 the City shored up the critical needs of the foundation,” he said. “This year we will be taking steps to save the building."

Gray didn’t say how much the repairs would cost, but that a budget plan will come during council meetings in April.

All in all, the mayor said, he wants to make Lexington the “best city.”

“Like every one of you in this room want Lexington to be the best city in America,” Gray said.
