Group Looks To Stop Cosby Performance In Lexington

Bill Cosby has been losing gigs all over the country because of sexual assault allegations.

He’s supposed to perform in Lexington, at the Singletary Center for the Arts.

A Lexington group called ‘Compassionate Kentucky’ wants to see that event, cancelled.

It was December 2013 when controversial DJ and a founder of a revenge porn website, Hunter Moore was scheduled to perform at the Art Bar.

Through letters, community involvement and social media, ‘Compassionate Kentucky’ formed and succeeded, influencing bar owners to cancel Moore’s show.

Now, the group is at it again.

"This seemed like too similar of a situation and too important,” said leader, Alli Sehon.

In recent weeks the number of women accusing famed comedian and TV star Bill Cosby of sexual assault has grown, up to more than two dozen.

Yet, while venues across the country continue to drop Cosby’s act, UK’s Singletary Center, has not.

In a statement, UK Public Relations said, "the event is not a university-sponsored event. The entertainer’s promoter has a contract with the Singletary Center to host this event. To my knowledge, nothing has changed at this time."

It’s a process that ‘Compassionate Kentucky’ understands but it won’t stop them from campaigning against Cosby’s appearance, especially on social media.

The group’s Facebook page rolls 2400 likes deep and serves as a community cork board of sorts. It even created a hashtag, #CancelCosbyUK. Key stroke, by click, by tweet, ‘Compassionate Kentucky’ hopes to keep Cosby, out of the Singletary Center.

"It’s just such an effective tool, it’s a free way to communicate with people not just from Lexington but all over. And so it’s nice for a group that doesn’t have a big budget for a website to stay in contact,” said Sehon.

Cosby’s performance is scheduled for March 15th, at seven in the evening. The Singletary Center said since the accusations against Cosby began, ticket sales have slowed.

Cosby’s legal team maintains his innocence and no charges have been filed against the comedian right now.
